A brief background on the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata standard will be given including its benefits and challenges. This will be followed by an example of one of the tools that helps produce and exploit DDI metadata. Some of the other standards used will also be briefly mentioned, as well as the importance of best practices. A DDI Lifecycle Model will illustrate how metadata production and research data management can be integrated. No previous knowledge of DDI is required to enjoy this gentle introduction to DDI.
